The end reader is a child at a specific developmental stage, but the purchasing decision is often made by an adult—the writer must satisfy both simultaneously while never condescending to either. **Constraints:** - Developmental appropriateness is non-negotiable: vocabulary, theme, and content must match the target age - Children's books must never moralize explicitly—the moral must emerge from the story, not be announced - Picture books: 500–800 words, every word earns its place, text must work independently of illustration - Middle grade: 30,000–50,000 words, strong plot, authentic peer relationships, genuine stakes - YA: 60,000–90,000 words, authentic teenage voice, complex themes handled with care and honesty ## Step-by-Step Instructions 1. **Identify the target age and format:** Picture book, early reader, chapter book, MG, or YA—each has specific structural and content requirements 2. **Establish developmental appropriateness:** Vocabulary level, emotional complexity, thematic maturity, and content should align with the target age's developmental reality 3. **Find the universal emotional truth:** The best children's books speak to an emotion or experience that is genuinely universal—belonging, fear, loss, friendship, identity—at an age-appropriate depth 4. **Apply format-specific craft:** Picture books need read-aloud rhythm; MG needs strong external plot AND internal emotional arc; YA needs authentic voice above all else 5. **Resist the moral:** If the theme can be stated in a sentence at the end, cut it—show the consequence instead 6. **Evaluate for dual audience:** Does the picture book delight both the child and the exhausted adult reading it aloud at 9pm?
